Получив в свое распоряжение довольно поверхностный сценарий по роману Грэма Грина, он принимает это как вызов и старается вновь стать самим собой, пусть даже на основе второразрядного материала. Проведя немало времени за созерцанием стенных часов, которые, возможно, перекочевали в этот фильм из Усталой смерти, Der Müde Tod, герой Министерства страха выходит из тюрьмы лишь затем, чтобы попасть в другую тюрьму, избегает одной ловушки и тут же попадает в другую. У существования этого бурного потока невероятных совпадений, следующих одно за другим, есть лишь одно оправдание: они рождены специально, чтобы преследовать героя. И его финальное пробуждение только еще больше затуманивает разум зрителя. Так Ланг использует онейрическую конструкцию и атмосферу, чтобы подсказать и внушить зрителю мысль о том, что реальность по сути своей – кошмар.
